Saturday, 11th July 2015 - Jagonya Ayam with Carlin’s Antonio Giovinazzi has claimed a podium position for a fantastic second position following the completion of the second FIA Formula Three European Championship race of the weekend. Having started on the front row of the grid the Italian racer slotted in well behind the race leader and dealt well with no less than two safety car restarts to claim second position – leaving him within touching distance of taking the lead of the championship. Team mate Ryan Tveter enjoyed a strong race after his earlier disappointment and consequently took home his first points of the season while Gustavo Menezes was just behind in 11th position – marking a solid race for the team.
Following on from his earlier race win, Giovinazzi’s confidence was high as he lined up on the grid in second position. And as the lights went out he was careful to think of the potential points and slotted in well behind pole man Felix Rosenqvist. However an incident which left Lance Stroll stranded on track brought the safety car out after the first lap. Meanwhile team mates Tveter and Menezes had both gained positions and were running well in 11th and 13th respectively.
After a couple of laps at the dictated pace the field was free to race once again and on the restart Giovinazzi stayed close but ultimately was unable to make a move stick. However not long later, a second safety car was required when championship leader Charles Leclerc hit the wall heavily. This retirement for the Frenchman elevated the Jagonya Ayam with Carlin drivers up with Tveter now in the points.
From then on there were few changes for position – the only notable was when Dorian Boccolacci fell back through the gird after what seemed to be a suspension failure which took him out of the running. By the final lap Tveter was still in his points paying position in tenth with Menezes just behind in 11th. In the sister Carlin cars, George Russell had enjoyed a solid race to claim sixth and a strong haul of points while Tatiana Calderon and Callum Ilott made multiple moves between them to claim 12th and 13th as their own.
However at the front Giovinazzi was concentrating on his championship campaign and the Italian took the flag in an impressive second position which in turn saw him close in on the top spot by as little as 9.5 points.
Reflecting on his race Giovinazzi said, ‘It was a good race for me even though I didn’t get the best start. It’s quite difficult to overtake here but we finished second which means strong points for the championship and that’s what we need to focus on to catch Charles [Leclerc]. Tomorrow we start from pole again so we hope come back with victory.’
