Russia, 13th July 2014 - Jagonya Ayam with Carlin’s Tom Blomqvist has taken third position following another strong showing for the British racer in the second race of the weekend at the Moscow Raceway in Russia. The FIA Formula Three European championship has made a fantastic debut at the Russian circuit this weekend with the racing certainly providing mixed emotions for the team. Blomqvist held an assured third position throughout the race however fortunes were not so kind for team mates Antonio Giovinazzi and Sean Gelael who finished the race in 16th and 17th respectively.
For the second race of weekend the sun continued to shine however it was a slightly dusty track for the drivers to contend with as the lights went out. Off the line Blomqvist, from third position, had a great start and made sure to keep his position as the field streamed into the first corner. However Giovinazzi was less fortunate and lost a couple of positions initially however the Italian was in 13th as he crossed the line marking the first lap with Gelael in 17th.
However things were soon to change when Gelael, who had been fighting well with Roy Nissany, was tapped by the Mucke driver with the contact seeming to damage his tyre. This in turn caused the young Indonesian to spin his Volkswagen Carlin Dallara a lap later. Pulling into the pits to replace the tyre, he lost valuable time and fell a lap behind the leaders – effectively ruining the rest of his race.
Giovinazzi was the next driver to suffer; he had been having a relatively uneventful race however soon saw himself handed a drive through for exceeding track limits. In a similar fashion to team mate Gelael he also fell down the order as a result.
However at the front it was a different story for Blomqvist who was beginning to chase Antonio Fuoco for second position. Despite getting close on numerous occasions the circuit allowed for few opportunities to make the move. Blomqvist crossed the line close behind the Pema Powerteam driver taking another strong podium position for third overall.
Blomqvist said of his race, ‘It’s good to have achieved a podium – we’ve been quick here all weekend so to get that is nice for me and for the team. I was close behind [Antonio] Fuoco for the most of the race but it’s just so difficult to overtake here that I couldn’t really do much about it. But we have more points on the board and we have another strong starting position this afternoon so I’m looking forward to maximising that and finishing off the weekend with a final strong result.’
The third and final race will see the three Jagonya Ayam with Carlin drivers back in action later this afternoon at 17.25 local time.
