Jagonya Ayam with Carlin’s Tom Blomqvist has once again produced a strong qualifying session in which he ended up the fastest man on track. The British racer was the quickest man during the second FIA Formula Three European Championship qualifying session this afternoon for most of the running and his time was unable to be bettered. Team mate Antonio Giovinazzi also carried on his strong form of which he has shown around the Hockenheimring to set the fourth quickest time of the day while Indonesian racer Sean Gelael set the 17th fastest time of the session.
As had been the case with yesterday’s first qualifying session it took a few minutes before the majority of the cars took to the track to start their flying laps. Sean Gelael left the pits ahead of his team mates as the track went green, marking the start of the qualifying session. However it was a few minutes until all three Jagonya Ayam with Carlin drivers had set their flying laps.
Over the next few minutes the times fell and Giovinazzi had moved his Volkswagen powered Dallara car up to sixth position while Gelael was 13th and Blomqvist 14th. After the mid-point of the session Giovinazzi was the first of the Jagonya Ayam with Carlin men to make his mark on the top with a flying lap that placed him in provisional pole position.
However soon enough Blomqvist began to set purple sectors and looked as though his time would be the new benchmark; it was, and the Brit flew straight to the top. Meanwhile Gelael was getting quicker on track too and lying in 15th position overall while Giovinazzi was waiting to set his next lap.
Blomqvist’s time could not be bettered and the Jagonya Ayam with Carlin man remained on top to take two pole positions ahead of tomorrow’s racing action. Giovinazzi improved on his final lap to go fourth while Gelael will line up 17th with his quickest lap.
Blomqvist said of his session, ‘The car was working really well and it was great to get the double pole position here. It was possibly one of my strongest qualifying sessions I’ve ever had – the team did a really good job and I had a great feeling in the car. I felt really on it and knew we were running very well throughout so it’s a nice way to repay the team for all of their hard work.’
